Listeria spp. are microaerophilic, Gram-positive, asporogenous, non-encapsulated, non-branching, short, motile rods. Motility is pronounced at 20°C. Identification of Listeria spp. is based on successful isolation of the organism, biochemical characterization, and serological confirmation.
