Silver Nitrate

Silver nitrate (AgNO₃) is one of the most important compounds of the element Silver (Ag) since it is basic raw material for silver salt synthesis. Silver nitrate is easily soluble in water, alcohol and acetone, and is the output of the reaction between nitric acid with silver metal. Silver nitrate is a light-sensitive reactant and used extensively in the preparation of silver salts for photography. Silver nitrate is also used as an analytical reagent, in silver plating, preparation of mirrors, indelible inks, hair dyes and has numerous medicinal uses. In histology, silver nitrate is used for silver staining, for demonstrating proteins and nucleic acids. Silver nitrate is also used as a stain in scanning electron microscopy.
